Ngee Ann Announces Special Programme For Direct Polytechnic Admission Students

~ How this pioneer batch will gain a head start at NP

Singapore, 17 May 2007 - Sweat it out, have a lot of fun and get a head start in your studies before the new term begins. This is what new students can look forward to during the Ngee Ann Preparatory Programme (NPP) for the pioneer batch admitted under the Direct Polytechnic Admission (DPA) Exercise, announced by the Ministry of Education today.

Highlights of the NPP include:

A highly charged sports camp where students will get to explore the campus’ grounds, and challenge themselves in games and sports activities;
An overseas adventure camp to widen their perspective;
Visits to industries for practical insights;
Elective and foundational modules to start their academic programme and earn them credit points.
“Developing the mind and body is an integral part of the Ngee Ann experience, so it is good to get the newcomers enthused from the start,” said Mr Chia Mia Chiang, the Principal of Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP).

Elective and Foundational Modules

Elaborating on the NPP, he said students will take four elective modules and one foundational module over eight weeks. The programme has been specially customised to broaden their learning experience, and give them a strong foundation even before the formal polytechnic term commences.

The elective modules, which bear NP's hallmark of broad-based education, are aimed at enhancing the students' exposure in areas outside their core disciplines. The foundational modules are core discipline modules which are directly relevant to the students' courses.

Students will also enjoy insightful field trips for a first-hand glimpse into various industries in the business, technology and science clusters.

Details of the modules are in the Appendix.

Students will earn credits for taking these elective and foundational modules. This means they will be exempted from taking related modules in their first year, thereby freeing up 180 hours of curriculum time. This extra time can then be used for more CCAs, extra certifications, and enrichment modules to gain an edge in the job market.

Ngee Ann will be taking in 100 students under the first DPA exercise. Pledging full support for the scheme, Mr Chia said: “Those who are already very sure that they wish to study in a polytechnic will certainly appreciate securing a place in advance, in view of the rising competition for polytechnic courses.”

Ngee Ann's Selection Criteria

For the DPA, Ngee Ann is looking out for candidates who clearly demonstrate an interest and aptitude for hands-on learning. The criteria are as follows:

Recommendation by school teacher(s)
Participation in Ngee Ann’s programmes such as the Advanced Elective Modules (AEMs), competitions, seminars and enrichment programmes
School CCA performance and any special talent
Performance at selection interviews
To ensure that students are able to cope with the rigours of a polytechnic education, students selected for the DPA will still need to sit for the ‘O' Level examinations and obtain the following:

An ELR2B2 score of not more than 26 points, where EL refers to English Language, R2 refers to 2 Relevant Subjects, and B2 refers to 2 Other Best Subjects (excluding CCA);
Minimum entry requirements for the courses chosen.
Special Briefings for Students

Giving some advice to secondary school students, Mr Chia urged them to consider carefully before applying for courses under the DPA.

“This is a decision that will have a major impact on their lives. So they need to ask themselves whether a polytechnic education is a good fit for their learning style and career aspirations,” he said.

To help students and parents find out more about the DPA, the polytechnic’s style of learning and the courses available, Ngee Ann is opening up its campus on Wednesday, 23 May.

Two separate briefings will be held at Ngee Ann Polytechnic's Convention Centre at 1.30pm and 2.45pm. These will be followed by campus tours and course counselling. To register, please email aad@np.edu.sg or call
